Ciulla's "What is Work"

Definitions and Meanings, here Ciulla goes on to explain how depending on where you look there are multitude of meanings and definitions of the word work, but because it means something different for everyone and every situation the word can not be defined as one thing.
What's in a Word, here Ciulla talks about how when you give something a name it can change or even give meaning to something, and depending on the name different feelings or emotions are felt.
Activities We Call Work, is about the differences between what people constitute work as. Ciulla explains how "work is not only a kind of activity but a set of values and ideas related to that activity."
Work as an Attitude, this section goes into the how the emotion of sypmthamy is closely related to the word work, because people often have an attitude that work is something people are obligated to do rather then want to do. Ciulla later goes on to explain how in the Thai culture work and party derive from the same word, and often try to relate them together so people do not mind work as much.
Anything Can Be Work, explains how the word work has a extremely broad definition, and rightfully so, because as Ciulla mentions "we do work and we go to a pace called work. Work is something we have, something we own, and something we make."
The Labor of Our Bodies, talks about the difference in work and labor. Ciulla mentions how labor is a verb which often is about the energy someone uses. The difference between the two words is that a laborer is someone who preforms services, while a worker creates something in their effort.
Work that Hurts, talks about how we dislike work, because it is associated with "be boring, exhausting, and of seemingly endless duration." Ciulla then goes on to tell of stories where people put in work to receive nothing as a punishment, and ask if would be different if they got paid for their efforts either physically or spiritually.
Its Only a Job, sums up the rest of the article by explaining what a job is and where is comes from, and more importantly how its related to work. Ending with how like work it depends on the circumstances and culture to be able to define what work and a job is.
In the article Ciulla states "work is not only a kind of activity but a set of values and ideas related to that activity." As an industrial designer I feel as though this statement is closely related to my field. I feel this way because when designing a product a lot of things go into it, the obvious one everyone can see is its overall purpose. However there are lot of things people may not be able to see right away, like the emotions and feeling a product gives a person because of it's purpose. When a designer is designing, they must always have these values and ideas in mind to be successful.

Kwun and Walker Part 2

Kwun's "Lady Gaga is a Machine for Dancing"
Kwun's thesis in this article is that Lady Gaga is an original artist, whose appearance and matches her artistic creativity. She starts her article off with comparing clothing and architecture, stating how the two both support and protect the human body. Kwun then moves on by describing a multitude of Lady Gaga's extreme and cutting edge outfits, while also describing events of her life. Doing this draws a comparison between her life and outfits, both exotic, different, and artistic.

Walker's "Paint is Black"
Walker's thesis in this article is that Marlboro's new black design is short of "new-product suicide by design." Walker supports this theory by stating the negative connotations which go hand in hand with the color black, and the negative connotations which go hand in hand with smoking. He then further goes on to explain that cigarette companies should create cigarette packaging with the thought of showing the dangers involved, since everyone already knows the dangers. Though Walker does not think that this was necessarily Marlboro's intentions, but however meaning to or not it does in a subtle way hint at the negatives which go along with smoking.

Walker's "Package it Black"

1.) The cigarette pack discussed in this article looks like a the normal Marbolo pack, the difference being, instead of the original gold, red, and green, black dominants the pack. They show an actual picture in the article and it does help the article, but I do not think it was absolutely necessary to have.

2.) Walker’s view of the new color draws to the negative emotions and dangers, which go hand in hand with smoking. He states, “lungs blacked by smoking, darkened teeth, poisoned bodily systems, the blackness of death itself,” all which seems to emphasize the new color change.

Kwun's "Lady Gaga is a Machine for Dancing"

1.) “In a recent guest performance on Gossip Girl, GaGa appears onstage in a blood red gown with a form-fitting, lacey bodice that gives way to a thirty-foot long, sequined train. Aside from the X-shaped nipple pasties she cheekily applies over the dress, it’s a conservative choice of costume, and a rare occasion in which we find her, for once, fully clothed. The dress has a romantic, gothic feel, with its heavy, dramatic draping. It’s much less rigid and sculptural than many of her past stage costumes, but its architectural qualities come forth—not through reference or form, as with the globular headpiece she wore on Ellen, but in function.”

“The Gehry-for-GaGa hat looks like a crumpled up, silver turban, a mish-mash of polygonal fabric bits that peel back to reveal a glittery crystal ball, one that even the most clairvoyant of palm readers might only hope to own.”

“Wearing a headpiece that took the form of an intergalactic set of orbits. A series of golden rings differing in width and diameter suspended about her dome, rotating and shifting in different axes at each gesture and slight nod of the head. Reminiscent of a chemistry model demonstrating the orbital movement of electrons around a nucleus, the effect was—both literally and figuratively—atomic.”

During this article these descriptions where made to describe a few of Lady Gaga’s outfits she has worn over the past couple of years, to help better communicate her style. In some cases the author did a great job describing the outfit, but because of how bizarre her outfits are, I felt as though a picture was needed to get the full embodiment of what she is about.

2.) “The term “architectural” has become an increasingly common term in the

fashion industry to describe pieces that are more geometric and sculptural, as opposed to, say, frilly or flowy. Both practices, at their most basic conceits, serve to shelter and protect the body… Both design objects are loaded with visual codes that carry great personal, social, and cultural expressions of its users.” This quote by the author serves as the original concept the paper was heading towards, but as the article went on it slightly changed more specifically to how Lady Gaga is doing this in her own way. “How do I make music and performances that are thought-provoking, fresh and future?” It’s a lofty goal to take on as a one-woman act, but with the help of a design collective that she lovingly calls the “Haus of GaGa,” she is able to turn her personal meta-pop project into a palpable reality…Lady GaGa is the successful prototype of a post-modern pop star brought into reality: a bonafide piece of living, breathing architecture, an intricately designed construction intended for mass consumption.”

I'm writing mine about being inspired about the world around us.

How much money do you make?
I can't I'm broke as shit, literally have 5.30 in my bank account.

What projects would you like to work on in the future?
You guys were lucky, I wish they'd give me unlimited wood to make any furniture piece I wanted, theyre making us design shit out of garbage.

What is your favorite project you've worked on?
Really? I thought the Allessi Collab was the best.

Are you jumping on this "go green" train?
Every single company is doing sustainable stuff, definitely where the money is going to be when we get out.

What software do you use?
Yeah, I'm getting better with Illustrator and Photoshop now, but I want to be sick at making shit on Solid Works.

Do you ever work with any other designers, if so who?
Yeah, its me and Keegan.

What inspires you?
Everything.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
Haha yeah right, I better be getting paid not living with my parents otherwise I'm killing myself.
